Toto Wolff faces a new kind of pressure these days: watching his nine-year-old son, Jack, surge to the top of the IAME Karting Series championship after a pivotal victory in Italy.
Jack’s latest win has vaulted him into the championship lead just before the season finale. Trackside, the Mercedes Formula 1 team principal spoke openly about the unique parenting challenges that come with nurturing a young racer.
"This is where it all starts. Formula 1 is basically this on steroids. Same kind of racing and watching the kids is just a super experience," Wolff said, glancing between the circuit and his son.
During a joint interview, Jack was asked if he feels the pressure of leading a fiercely competitive junior series. His answer was simple: "Yes." The weight of expectation is already real for the young contender.
Wolff didn’t shy away from the reality of that pressure. "You need to find the right balance because as a parent you’re emotionally involved and that’s completely normal. But he’s nine years old, there are so many small kids and you need to strike the balance right, and we try. Sometimes we get it wrong."

Setbacks are part of the journey. Wolff admitted Jack had faced "difficult moments" during the Italian event, but insisted that each challenge is a building block for the future. "You have difficult moments and he had some difficult moments today and in the end it comes all together, and every little failure is a learning for the future," he explained.
Asked what advice he’d offer other parents in the karting paddock, Wolff didn’t hesitate. "Just give them time. They’re so small, let them enjoy the karting, and that’s the most important," he said.
Jack’s progress, and his father’s frankness, sparked a flurry of reactions online. Social media users were quick to point out Jack’s racing pedigree, referencing both his parents’ motorsport backgrounds. "Jack is going to be a beast. He’s been raised by nothing but talent. Actually looking forward to seeing him progress on, talent already starting to show in him," one TikTok user commented.
